POSITIVE IMPACTS OF WESTERNIZATION

MODERNIZATION

Westernization is making India more modern. The Indian culture is a very old culture and is staying the same. However, now the western culture is changing it to become more modern. Today, the western media is making many people in India especially teenagers dressing more modernly like jeans, tee shirts etc. Also, modernization doesn’t only mean being modern by appearance or physical traits but also by the mental attributes. Modernization has also enabled to increase the economic growth of India.

PUBLIC HEALTH

Due to westernization influence, sanitation and public health has improved greatly in India. Many western doctors have immigrated into India and have made medicines which have helped reduce sicknesses, diseases in large parts because health care has become accessible.

LABOR

The presence of western traders in India has increased the demands for goods and services in India. As a result of that, Indian artisans, craftsmen and weavers have been employed. These artisans and craftsmen have grown in numbers and now the Indian labor force has become more skilled and handy.

EDUCATION

Westernization has also benefited areas of education in India. The Briti7sh occupied India built a number of schools throughout the country and this made the literacy level to increase and the poorest class of society had access to knowledge.

FILMS AND MOVIES

Westernization has brought media as well in India. For example, India now has a famous movie making media called ‘Bollywood’ which came from Hollywood in America. Bollywood’s films earlier mostly feature India, its culture, tradition and religion but now it is more into showing western culture. Bollywood is now quiet popular in India and many people know about it. So media in India has also improved due to the western culture.

NEGATIVE IMPACT OF WESTERNISATION

DIVORCE

As per survey the average rate of divorce in west is 40% that of India. May be it depicts the fact of self independence or awareness to one’s particular rights. But in point of view marriage is some kind of sacred relationship what one can have in their whole life.

DRESSING SENSE

The present mentality is as “the more you expose the more modern you are”. But being modern doesn’t always mean that you just ignore your moral values.

GUARDIANSHIP 

There is some lack of guardianship in western culture. In western parts parents feel that their children attain enough caliber to take their own decisions or it may be children’s ignorance to their parents role on their life decision. But a better guidance is very important in someone’s better future. And sometimes this lack of guardianship causes teens to be trapped in a condition of depression and frustration.

DRUG ADDICTION

According to world drug report the scale of drug addicted teens from western countries are leading with a great margin. This is a serious issue at present. But nowadays just to represent oneself in modern era teens are greatly attracted towards drug.

THINGS TO BE ADOPTED

All though all the things that I have mentioned in the “Positive Impact” should be adopted but still there are few more things that we should adopt. For example

JUDGMENT

The people from the west usually don’t judge one’s life on the basis of their perceptions which may be influenced cause of caste/sex/races, which helps the society to make a control over the riots which are generally the bi-product of the above mentioned discrimination.

HABIT OF CLEANLINESS

Most of us have the habit of throwing garbage here and there instead of putting it in its proper place. But, in western countries there is a big difference in cleanliness habits. They keep their surroundings absolutely clean and do not throw even a single bit of paper on the road, in parks or at public places. Everything is well maintained. In some western countries, different types of garbage like plastic, kitchen waste, etc are required to be put in separate garbage bags. These are then kept outside the home to be collected by respective garbage collectors. But in India, throwing garbage in empty plots is a common scene. So, we must learn a sense of cleanliness from them.

TRAFFIC RULES

Indians have a habit of breaking the rules. Almost every Indian in his lifetime has once broken the traffic rules intentionally or unintentionally. But westerners follow all the traffic rules very strictly, even if there is no traffic policeman around.

PROFESSIONALISM

Be professional like people in the West who do not allow their personal feelings, problems and dealings to interfere in their professional lives. Along with this we must be punctual and respect the other person’s time. Therefore, going ahead by preserving our values and culture is not wrong. Also, we should change with time for good as everything in this world is changing. We must adopt good values of western culture to our value system for betterment, growth and development.
